Liverpool confirmed on October 18 that midfielder Virgil van Dijk injured his knee ligament, encountered in the 2-2 Everton draw in the Premier League.
Liverpool did not reveal the level of damage to Van Dijk’s knee ligaments, nor the time of recovery. However, the need for surgery inevitably leaves him absent within months.
Van Dijk was injured in the 6th minute after being hit by goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Pickford was not penalized because Van Dijk was previously offside. Without Van Dijk, Liverpool was held 2-2 by Everton on October 17.
After the match, beIN Sports revealed midfielder Nigel de Jong called Van Dijk, and determined that the Liverpool midfielder had a broken ligament and had to rest for the rest of the season. But, Liverpool did not confirm this information.
Van Dijk played 93 consecutive games for Liverpool in the Premier League without missing a minute, until injured. During this time, Liverpool won 72 games and lost only seven.
Midfielder Thiago Alcantara was also injured after being kicked in the leg by Richarlison. According to The Athletic, Thiago will not be playing against Ajax in the Champions League on the evening of October 21, but he won’t take a long break. Goalkeeper Alisson Becker has also progressed well and he may return later this month.
